Tile Tips

Measurement and Installation of Tile and Stone

Tilemarket.com recommends using a professional installer for your project.  Remember to order extra tiles to compensate for any breakage during installation. Extra tiles can also be used in the future if any tiles need replacing.  All natural stone must be sealed after installation.  This provides a protective coating for your material and grout joints.

Sealing

All natural stone must be sealed after installation.  Be sure to discuss this with your installer at the beginning of your project.

Grouting

Use the appropriate grout for your application. A non-sanded grout should be used for grout joints that are 1/8” and smaller in widths, while sanded grouts are to be used in joints which are larger. Typically you’ll find the smaller grout joints filled with the non-sanded grout in the bathroom and shower areas.

Shade Variation/Blending

Color variances are inherent in all natural stone, hand-glazed tile and most ceramic tile.  Samples are a good indicator of the overall appearance of your tile, but your order will likely contain shade and pattern variations. All material should be blended prior to installation to achieve the desired balance.  Be sure to order enough tile from the same lot to complete your project.

Inspection of Tile

Be sure to carefully inspect your order prior to installation.  Material cannot be returned once it has been installed.

Cleaning

Tilemarket.com recommends Miracle Sealants for all cleaning and maintenance purposes.

Finishes

The finish of a stone contributes to its beauty and durability.  The following describes various finishes:

  • Polished – this finish is the least porous, providing a smooth, high gloss, and reflective appearance
  • Honed – this finish is less formal and softer with a matte or satin appearance
  • Tumbled – stone is placed in a tumbling machine which provides worn edges and face resulting in a softened texture and appearance.
  • Chiseled – the edges of the tile are chiseled providing a more rustic finish
  • Antiqued – stone is tumbled to evoke a worn and weathered finish
  • Flamed – torch heat is applied to stone resulting in a textured, natural-looking finish
  • Filled – surface holes of stone are filled with epoxy or cement prior to polishing or honing the material.
